In short: the app collects nothing about you and sends nothing
anywhere. Your position is determined on the device and stays there.
What this is
MAKGrib is a free, non-commercial, open-source application for
viewing marine weather forecasts. It has no accounts, no
registration and no advertising.
Data collected
None. The app collects no personal or device data, stores none of it
anywhere outside your device, and shares none with third parties. It
contains no analytics and no advertising libraries.
Location
If you grant location access, the app shows your position on the
map. Coordinates are computed on the device, used only for display,
and are never transmitted — neither to the developer nor to
anyone else. No track history is kept. The permission is optional:
everything else works without it.
Network use
The app goes online only when you tap “download weather”. The
request goes directly to the public servers of the United States
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA/NCEP,
nomads.ncep.noaa.gov). It carries only the bounds of the
map area and the forecast parameters — how many days and at what
interval. It carries nothing about you, your device or your
position.
What NOAA does with such requests is governed by that organisation;
the developer of MAKGrib has no connection to their servers.
Stored on your device
| What | Why |
| The forecast file | so it opens again when there is no connection |
| Route, departure time, speed | so they need not be entered again |
| Settings: layer, time zone, language | so they need not be set again |
| Coastline maps | unpacked from the app itself on first run |
All of it lives in the app's private folder, unreachable by other
apps, and is removed when the app is uninstalled.
Permissions
| Permission | Used for |
| Internet | downloading a forecast at your command |
| Network state | checking there is a connection before downloading |
| Location | showing your position on the map; optional |
Children
The app is made for skippers and fishermen and is not directed at
children. It collects no age information.
Not a navigation device
MAKGrib displays weather forecasts and helps in planning a passage.
It is not a navigation instrument and not a substitute for proper
equipment, charts or official storm warnings. The decision to put to
sea rests with the skipper.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear on this page
with a new date.
